There is something wonderful about Witley Court that’s hard to define

In its Victorian heyday it was one of England’s great country houses, hosting many a lavish party. The future King, Edward VII came here to hunt.

From our Visitors’ Book

“What a find! A little gem! Five star food and service, thank you.”

But in 1937 a fire broke out, and today it is a beautiful ruin, set in spectacular gardens, with an amazing and fully restored fountain which is fired every day during the main season. Photographs cannot do justice to the grandeur of Witley Court which is now cared for by English Heritage. More information is available on their web site.

Attached to Witley Court is Witley Church which claims to be Britain’s finest baroque church. It will not disappoint. The outside gives only one hint – a golden dome above the church clock – to what’s in store.

Inside is a feast for the eyes: exquisite gilded decorations, paintings by Antonio Bellucci (1654-1726), painted glass windows, fine carvings and a wonderful organ with a history of its own. The acoustics are wonderful and the Church, as well as being the parish church of Great Witley, hosts concerts and recitals throughout the year.

The history of the church is fascinating and there’s a steward ready to tell you all about it on most days. Entrance to the church is free. Visit the Great Witley Church website for more information.
